Ideal Weight: What is the BMI Index all about?

The BMI index is a formula that is used to determine if you are overweight or underweight. BMI stands for Body Mass Index. Everyone has an average weight they should be and it is all determined by their height, age and gender. Men of course should have a larger weight average than women, but it should be more muscle than fat. Women on the other hand are supposed to have more body fat than the average man.

There is a calculator that you can use with the Body Mass Index formula, which is BMI = kg/m2. This helps to compare your weight with other people your age and height. With the calculator, you type in your current weight in lbs or kg, then you type in your height in inches or feet and inches. You press calculate, which will then show you your Body Mass Index. For instance, if you are a 21 year old female and you are five foot six inches, your Body Mass Index will be 18.6 kg/m2. Your body description will be in normal range and in the 18th percentile. This means that 82% of people your age and height weigh more than you.

If you are at 50th percentile, you are closer to the average weight. When at 90th percentile, this means that you weight more than 90% if the other people your weight and age. These are only in comparison to individuals in America. You are also able to find out the ideal weight for your age and height range. To find this out, you will need to enter your weight, height, age and gender. You will then receive the calculations for the ideal weight you should be.

For the example used above, the 21 year old female’s ideal weight would be 116 lbs. This is the average weight of other people in this group. Studies show that women believe that their ideal body weight is unrealistically low and try to diet to lose tons of weight, which is unnecessary. Men on the other hand, usually believe that their ideal weight is much higher than it should be (higher than medically recommended).

The medical recommendation for the 21 year old female is between 118 pounds to 155 pounds. Anything below is underweight and anything above is overweight. Medical evidence believes that this average body weight range is equally health, so anything in between is fine.

It is a good idea to use the Body Mass Index calculator when trying to lose weight. You should try not to lose more than you need to. Your main goal should be to get to a healthy weight, not just to be thin. The taller you are the more you should weigh; so just because someone your age weighs much less, doesn’t mean you should too. As for men, it is important that you not gain too much weight or lose too much weight. Check to see what your BMI is before dieting.
